Treatment of Ru/CeO₂ with PPh₃ and HCHO in 2-methoxyalcohol was found to generate the catalytically active Ru species for hydroarylation of C-C multiple bonds. A variety of alkenes was applicable toward the title reactions. The solid Ru/CeO₂ could be recycled for several times toward title reactions.
