Treatment of Ru/CeO2 with PPh3 and HCHO in 2-methoxyalcohol was found to generate the catalytically active Ru species for hydroarylation of C-C multiple bonds. A variety of alkenes was applicable toward the title reactions. The solid Ru/CeO2 could be recycled for several times toward title reactions.
